SEA - INDIA ,Safety Engineers Association (India)was started in the year 2000. It is a registered body under the Societies Act 1975. This is a non-governmental organization working for enhancement of safety professionalism. The need for an association for the safety professionals was under consideration for a long time and it came into reality in the year 2001. Dr. M.Lakshmanan, then Chief inspector of factories, Government of Tamil Nadu, had taken the initiative to convene a meeting of senior safety professionals to discuss the formation of the association. Soon, Mr W.A.Balakumaran, Director, Regional Labour Institute, Chennai and other senior safety professionals from industries joined hands and formed the association. They also got it formally registered under Society,s Act, 1975. Initially, only about 50 safety professionals joined the association. But, the association has grown steadily to have more than 650 members as of now. Safety engineers from different parts of the country are getting enrolled. Practicing safety Professionals along with other para safety professionals such as those working in the field of safety education, safety law enforcement, safety consultancy and other safety service providers are also joining and become members under different category of membership. Student Members of safety engineering courses are also enrolled as Student Members of the association.

The principal objectives of the SEA (INDIA) are:
- To Serve as a vital link for safety engineers at national level.
- To share the knowledge and experience.
- To interact with other professional organisation.
- To get due recognition of the safety professional by improving their image.
- To provide advice/guidance/help to industries and safety professionals.
- To assist statutory bodies in formulating safety and related legislations.
